What is The Listening Program®?

The Listening Program (TLP) is a music-based listening therapy.

It is a safe, effective approach that helps improve brain function and reduce stress while training the brain in the auditory skills needed to effectively listen, learn and communicate.

The aim of The Listening Program is to improve the way the brain receives, processes and responds to auditory information.

TLP can also help other sensory systems to develop and integrate, so the benefits can be wide-ranging.

The Listening Program is a cost-effective programme costing just $34.95 per month through the Advanced Brain Technologies Online Portal. Three months of my professional coaching and support is included in the subscription cost. A set of approved headphones will also be needed, starting at around £40.

Your Questions Answered

What is The Listening Program (TLP)?

The Listening Program (TLP) is a music-based listening therapy developed by Advanced Brain Technologies. It uses specially processed music to provide targeted auditory stimulation and train the brain to process sound more effectively.

There are a number of different TLP programmes available. As a trained TLP provider, I will help you choose the appropriate programme for the individual listener, monitor progress and provide support throughout the programme.

Three months of my coaching and support are included FREE with the subscription.

What benefits can I expect from TLP, and what is its main goal?

The main goal of The Listening Program is to improve the way the brain receives, processes and responds to auditory information.

Benefits can include improvements in listening, auditory processing, attention, communication and learning, as well as reduced stress.

Because our sensory systems work together, improvements may also be seen in other areas of sensory processing and integration.

Every person is different, so the changes seen and the time they take to develop will vary from one listener to another.

Is TLP safe and who might consider using it?

Yes. The Listening Program® is a safe, non-invasive listening therapy that can be used across the lifespan, from babies and young children through to adults.

Listening difficulties can affect much more than our ability to hear and understand speech. They may also affect attention, memory, communication, reading and spelling, learning, sensory and motor skills, organisation, confidence and social interaction.

The Listening Checklist helps me understand the areas of difficulty and choose the most appropriate TLP programme for the individual listener. As everyone has different needs, I can advise on whether TLP may be appropriate and which programme would be most suitable.

How does TLP support listening, learning, and communication?

The Listening Program uses specially processed music to train the brain to receive, process and respond to sound more effectively.

Good auditory processing supports many of the skills needed for learning and communication, including attention, sound discrimination, memory, sequencing, understanding spoken language and following instructions. These skills can also affect reading, spelling and the ability to organise and express ideas.

By strengthening the brain's ability to process auditory information, TLP can make listening less effortful and support more effective learning and communication.

How is TLP delivered and what do I need to get started?

The Listening Program is usually accessed at home through the online portal. You will need an active subscription and a set of approved headphones, which currently start at around £40 in the UK.

A commonly used listening schedule is 15 minutes twice a day, 5 days a week, although other schedules are available. I will advise on the most appropriate programme and listening schedule for you or your child and provide support throughout.

For those who prefer not to use the online portal, pre-loaded TLP systems are also available. These can be used offline and I can provide them in GBP.

How much does TLP cost and are there additional expenses?

The Listening Program costs $34.95 per month when accessed through the Online Portal. The subscription is paid directly to Advanced Brain Technologies in US dollars.

You will also need a set of approved headphones, which currently start at around £40 in the UK. The headphones are normally a one-time purchase and can be used throughout the programme.

Three months of my coaching and support are included FREE with the subscription, so there is no additional charge for my support during this period.

Could listening difficulties be affecting you or your child?

A person can pass a hearing test and still have significant listening difficulties. Hearing tells us whether the ears can detect sound; effective listening also depends on how the brain receives, processes and responds to that auditory information.

Listening difficulties can show themselves in many different ways and are not always obvious. I use The Listening Program Listening Checklist to look at a range of skills and behaviours that may be related to listening.

These include attention and concentration, auditory processing, memory, speech and language, reading and spelling, sensory and motor skills, organisation, confidence, social interaction and energy levels.

The checklist helps to build a picture of the areas that may be causing difficulty and whether The Listening Program could be appropriate. It can also be used again to monitor changes over time.

Can The Listening Program help with reading and literacy?

Listening and auditory processing are important foundations for language and learning.

Difficulties with sound discrimination, attention, memory and sequencing can make reading and other aspects of literacy more difficult.

The Listening Program is not a reading programme and does not teach reading or phonics. Instead, it works on underlying listening and auditory processing skills that can support the development of language and literacy.

Where listening or auditory processing difficulties are contributing to problems with reading, spelling or literacy, TLP may therefore be a useful part of the support provided.

Why are approved headphones required for TLP?

The Listening Program uses specially processed music, so it is important that the sound is reproduced accurately. Approved headphones have been selected to deliver the music as intended and provide the appropriate sound quality and frequency response.

Using the correct headphones helps ensure that the listener receives the programme consistently throughout their listening sessions. I will provide a current list of approved models so you can choose the most suitable option for your budget and needs.

How do I get started or ask questions about TLP?

You can email me with any questions about The Listening Program® or to find out how to get started.

If you would prefer to talk, you can also arrange a FREE 15-minute consultation.

I will ask you to complete The Listening Checklist, which looks at how listening is affecting areas such as attention, auditory processing, memory, communication, learning, literacy, sensory and motor skills and everyday life. This helps me understand the individual listener and the areas where they are experiencing difficulty.

What does The Listening Program sound like?

The Listening Program uses specially processed music designed to provide the brain with a carefully structured listening experience. The programmes include a variety of music, so what you hear will vary depending on the TLP programme being used..

You can listen to a sample of the music here

How long does the programme take?

A typical TLP programme lasts around 20 weeks when listening for two 15-minute sessions a day, 5 days a week. However, different listening schedules are available and I will recommend the most appropriate schedule for the individual listener.

The length of the programme may therefore vary, and it may also be extended if listening sessions are missed or a different schedule is more appropriate.

Can TLP help with sensory integration?

Yes. Although The Listening Program works primarily through the auditory system, listening is closely connected with other sensory systems. TLP can support the development and integration of sensory processing, so changes may sometimes be seen in areas beyond listening and communication.

The Listening Checklist that I ask you to complete considers sensory and motor areas including balance, coordination, body awareness, spatial awareness, movement and rhythm as part of the overall picture.

What changes might I notice when using TLP?

Everyone begins The Listening Program with different strengths and difficulties, so the changes noticed will vary from person to person. You may notice changes in your child — or in yourself if you are using TLP — in areas such as listening and attention, understanding speech, communication, learning, reading or sensory processing.

Changes may also be noticed in coordination, confidence, social interaction or the ability to cope with everyday demands.

Changes may be gradual rather than immediate. The Listening Checklist completed before starting TLP can be used again during or after the programme to help identify changes across the different areas being monitored.
